Datsun's roots go back as far as 1911 when Masujiro Hashimoto created Kwaishinsha Motors with the aspires to establishing the initial Japanese regular automobile creation. The DAT model 31 was released in 1914 which was named soon after the surnames in the company's partners, Study, Aoyama and Takeuchi.

The company changed its name to DAT Motor Corporation in 1925 and started making trucks as well as the passenger vehicles they have manufactured. The 1st DAT trucks have been produced for the military current market but due to lower demands in the 1920's, DAT considered merging with other automobile companies like the Jitsuyo Jidosha Co. and later became DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. in 1932. They began selling full size automobiles for the Japanese marketplace till the issuance of a government ordinance that allowed 500cc cars being driven without a license. The company then produced 495cc autos referred to as "Datson"(meaning son of DAT), a brand new line of small cars which had been afterwards renamed "Datsun" by the Tobato Imono Co. Since "Datson" was much in-line with a Japanese word which meant "to lose money" it absolutely was changed to Dat - "sun" and utilized the rising sun motif for its emblems and to protect it from bad luck. Tobato Imono Co. after sold the factory in Osaka and merged with Nihon Sangyo Co. and rebuilt its operations in Osaka below the name Jidosha Seizo and was then later renamed Nissan Motor Co. in 1934.

In its childhood, Nissan produced replacement elements for Ford and Common Motors who were at the verge of being expelled from Japan through the new federal government. A year later, Nissan came up with a full line of vehicles on the market from trucks, buses, sedans to roadsters, phaetons and coupes. The Graham Paige designs ended up introduced in 1936 towards Nissan brand, which led towards the closure of Ford and GM operations in Japan.

The former Datsun business also became active in the Japanese war. The cars were after introduced towards the US current market right after several tests. The initial Datsuns were sold in California.
